PROJECTS

Columbia Hillman Arts & Cultural District projects seek to preserve and enhance the neighborhoods’ character and prioritize artists of color that represent local demographics.

Arts Revitalization Grants

The District is proud to have completed these public Arts Revitalization projects

“Riding the Number 7” mural at Columbia City Gallery

Tina Albro designed this mural depicting the #7 bus, with portraits by Jayashree Krishnan, of individuals that have historical significance in the neighborhood.

“This is for You” sculpture in Hillman City

This bent steel rod and fabric sculpture by Sarah Fetterman hangs from a tree in Hillman City and is illuminated with LED lighting.

Hillman City planter boxes

This project brought together artists and gardeners to reimagine the planters on Rainier Ave S. The planters have a fireworks theme as a nod to the historic Hitt’s Fireworks Company.

Murals at Royal Esquire Club

TR Miles created murals depicting local musical icons Ernestine Anderson and Quincy Jones outside of the Royal Esquire Club. These murals are digitally printed and enhanced with colored plexiglass to resemble broken stained glass.

Purrdie Burrdie I Love Myself, Can you See

Danitra Hunter created a children’s book featuring a character that represents black culture and self-love. The District funded the first printing of the book. Danitra donated books to local school libraries and did readings at schools in Southeast Seattle.

“Living Free” mural at Renew Physical Therapy

Vincent Keele and TR Miles created this mural that reflects the healing power of physical therapy.

Rainier Valley Creative District mural

The Rainier Valley Welcome Mural project engaged young BIPOC artists and community members to help beautify the business cores of the Rainier Valley. District funding supported the murals in Columbia City and Hillman City.
